———————————————————————————————————————
At the Konepaja Nordic Welding fair (held on 19th – 23rd March 2024 in Tampere, Finland), we asked visitors to guess how long it would take to cut a steel pipe with a diameter of 1200 mm (wall 10 mm). We received dozens of guesses, from which we drew the winners at the end of each day. Sawing time guesses ranged from less than a minute to more than half an hour.
The correct answer was 3 minutes and 4 seconds. The test cut-off had been carried out at a slow pace in our own premises. In the video you can see the cut-off, partially accelerated.

How to choose the right Exact blade?
Table of Contents
A brief introductory of Exact blades and how everything works
Exact has a wide range of specially designed saw blades and diamond discs for Exact PipeCut saws.
These blades are designed to provide a cutting solution for all the pipe materials we announce to be possible to cut with our machines. This means almost all, if not all pipe materials, can be cut with our solutions.
Some pipe materials are very straightforward to cut and it does not have many affecting factors. Then again, some other pipe materials have more affecting factors in terms of the pipe cut outcome and naturally need a special blade for seamless cutting results. An example of this type is plastic and stainless pipework.
This guide is designed to give an overview and a deeper dive into the capabilities of our blades, machines and how they work on various pipe materials.
The best practices and compatibilities can be found following this guide. The specifications in this guide are defined by the typical use cases as that covers the most usage and guidelines are more applicable for the equivalent. These are to give a strong direction to the given subjects, but as stated above, are to be considered in relation to your own unique situation and use case, which might vary more or less from the general approach of this guide.
If you are unsure or need help, please discuss with us to ensure the correct solution to your needs. We are always happy to help you.
Choosing the right Exact blade/disc to the right Exact machine
Please noteExact PipeCut and Cut+Bevel machines are usually supplied with one (1) default blade. For pipe saws it's usually TCT saw blade, and for PipeCut+Bevel machines it's usually a diamond disc.
Choosing the right blade is crucial for successful pipe cutting results. Choosing the right blade results in straight, clean and seamless pipe cuts.
Cutting with an unsuitable blade can cause severe damage to the blade, pipe and machine. That is worth to avoid, right?
Due to the nature and variance in pipe cutting needs, most blades are separately orderable as per your needs. We want to keep the costs at minimum – so you as our user will only pay for what you really need.
Generally Exact blades and discs can be categorized for the following pipe materials:
Cermet and INOX are especially intended for challenging stainless steel pipe cutting, but they naturally are also suitable for regular steel materials. INOX saw blade is the premium version of Cermet.
TCT is the most general Exact saw blade, that is included with most pipe saws in the standard equipment. This blade is the most suitable for regular steel, easier plastic types, aluminum and copper.
TCT P is the way to go, when you want to cut both soft and hard plastic materials. TCT P is similar to TCT in terms of the blade material composition, but has specifically designed teeth and teeth spacing.
ALU saw blades are initially designed for aluminum and plastics. Later they were discovered to work very well on HDPE and especially thick-walled plastic pipes. The reasons are similar to TCT P.
Diamond X is as the name states, diamond disc. These are intended only for cutting of cast iron, ductile (nodular cast iron), glass fiber etc. Works also on multi-layer pipes containing these pipe materials.
Diamond Cut Bevel disc is very similar to Diamond X, with the biggest difference being that this cut bevel disc can cut and bevel pipes in one process. Please note, only some machines can be mounted with this special disc.
Cut bevel disc (regular) is similar to the above disc, meaning that this blade type is capable of cutting and beveling pipes in one process. However, regular cut bevel disc is only suitable for plastic pipe materials. Please note, only some machines can be mounted with this special blade.
Exact blades' fundamentals for compatibility
Please read both sections below!• Recommended compatibility • Technical compatibility
Recommended compatibility, blades for the most optimal cutting results
Exact blades’ compatibility has two main fundamentals, and it’s important to understand the fact that although you can technically mount many of the Exact blades on several machines, it does not necessarily mean that you should do so.
For this reason we have gathered information here to help you with selecting the right blade to your needs, while showing the technical truth of what blades can be mounted on which machines.
Please read both sections to get a full understanding of the overview.
First, here you will find the recommendation chart for blades and pipe materials.

Why are some of the fields empty?
This is due to some combinations for blades and intended pipe materials are not straightforward. Some of the reasons are:
• Simply not being suitable for the pipe material • Not having enough cutting test data • Conflicting cutting results • Pipe wall thickness
Technical compatibility in terms of fitting in measurements
This means that all the blades that can be actually mounted on a specific Exact machine, from a technical viewpoint.
This does not necessarily mean that all the blades that can be technically mounted on the specific machines should actually be done so. The reason is simply that some blades produce significantly better results while mounted on their designated machine.
Technical compatibility chart for Exact blades & discs
Found your blade and want to see more details? Just click the blade name and go to the product page.
What blade size should be selected, if several sizes can be chosen?
General rule of thumb is that when the goal is the most optimal pipe cutting results with as long blade life as possible, you should choose the smallest possible blade size suitable to your needs.
Although being a good idea to pick a larger diameter blade size (than what you really need) to cover possible future needs, this might hinder the said two other things.
Ultimately this is a decision to be made between optimization: pipe cuttings results and short-term costs.
In the long-term operation it’s more cost-efficient to have several blade sizes and use the smallest diameter needed by the ongoing pipe cutting project. Although blades are designed to be as long lasting as possible, eventually the blades will wear out in use. For this reason it does not hurt to have several blade sizes, and it will be long-term cost-efficient in addition to providing better pipe cutting results.
ALU, TCT P, or something else for plastic pipe cutting?
ALU blades for plastic pipe cutting
1
This blade type was originally invented for aluminum pipe materials (hence the name), but was later discovered to work fairly well for plastics.
Suits best for: Best suited for soft plastic materials. Suits also well for thick-walled plastic pipes.
Why: The blade teeth are larger and the blade teeth spacing is larger (more room for the larger pipe chunks, thus not clogging so easily while cutting).
TCT P blades for plastic pipe cutting
2
TCT P blades are specifically designed for plastic pipe cutting. This blade type provides the most all-around cutting for soft and hard plastic materials.
Suits best for: Suits well for soft and hard plastic pipe materials.
Why: The blade teeth are also larger than in typical TCT and the spacing is also larger, that drives the same purpose as ALU blade.
TCT (regular) & Cermet blades for plastic pipe cutting
3
Technically and generally suitable for plastic pipe cutting, but not the most optimal solution for it. Although the regular TCT and Cermet blades’ teeth material is similar to the TCT P, the teething is very much different in terms of shape, size and spacing.
The spacing between blade teeth is smaller than on TCT P and on ALU blades. For that reason, pure plastic pipe cutting is recommended to be done with either TCT P or ALU blade for the best possible results.
Suits best for: General or seldom use.
Why: While the blade’s material composition is suitable for piercing plastics easily, the teething is not optimal for plastic cutting and might cause clogging or inaccurate cutting results.
Other blades for plastic pipe cutting
Technically and generally it’s possible to cut various plastics with some other Exact blades. For demanding plastic pipe cutting, though, we do not recommend that. The reason is usually the same. The blade teeth shape, size and spacing is not optimal for the cutting process that generates a large amount of fairly large plastic chips. These large plastic chips tend to clog the blade guard easily. Additionally, the cutting result might not be optimal.
Ultimately these are factors to be judged by your pipe cutting needs.

How To Cut Stainless Steel Pipes 10x (or in this case 27x) Faster?
The Most Efficient Way To Cut Stainless Steel (Comparison)
Cutting stainless steel pipe is usually a difficult and slow task, especially when the tool used for the job is angle grinder. Angle grinder is not only slow and inaccurate, but also dangerous and prone to cause accidents.
To make things more complicated, stainless steel pipe materials are challenging to cut due to their nature of material composition. As angle grinder was not really invented for pipe cutting in the first place – not to mention for challenging pipe materials – it’s no wonder that the outcome is what it is.
On the other hand, expensive and extremely heavy industrial machines are capable of cutting stainless steel pipe materials almost in a heartbeat, but the machines are usually not very user-friendly and the heavy machines are difficult to move around. This means that the pipes must be brought to the machine, instead of bringing the machine to the pipe.
This is often not very productive in environments where the work needs to be done in a versatile way, when the pipes need to be cut at specific places or when it’s just inconvenient to move the pipes around. Just to mention a few reasons.
But what if there was a solution to this. A machine that is lightweight and portable like the angle grinder, yet having the likewise power of a big industrial cutting machine?
This is where Exact PipeCut 220 INOX comes in. The machine has been invented based on customer wishes for the above-mentioned reasons. Previous Exact pipe saws are able to cut stainless steel materials, but the main benefit of the new machine is it’s tremendously increased blade life time in stainless steel pipe cutting (a lot, lot more cuts before the blade going dull) along with the special feature that avoids pipe contamination on vulnerable pipe surfaces – thanks to the parts touching pipe being made of stainless steel.
Last but not least, the new INOX pipe saw cuts stainless a lot faster than previous pipe cutter models as the technical specifications are made optimal for this type of materials.
So, actually how much faster is stainless pipe cutting with Exact if compared to an angle grinder?
Usually up to 10 times faster.
This time we wanted to test it in action and made a comparison of INOX 220 pipe saw and Angle Grinder.
The result?
See video below for the answer!
Why Is INOX 220 So Powerful At Cutting Stainless Steel Pipes & Tubes?
INOX 220 is the world’s first portable saw purely intended only for stainless steel pipe cutting. The machine has been invented with all the necessary features to optimize one goal: How to cut stainless steel pipes faster and more efficiently, while achieving a clean and straight cut – in the safest way possible.
Alright, then what are these features that make this machine reach the goal?
Optimized RPM
Powerful and robust motor
The machine parts touching vulnerable stainless steel surfaces are also made of stainless steel to avoid pipe contamination
Laser pointer for cutting point precision
Equipped with a blade of cutting-edge technology from the world’s top blade engineers and in our cutting tests we were able to make over 100 cuts without re-sharpening the blade
Other proven & best features from Exact machines
Lightweight Yet Versatile Way To Cut Stainless Steel
You will only have to carry the weight of 25 lbs (or 11.5 kg), and only for the duration you lift the machine up to the pipe. The machine itself loads most of the heavy straining, as the weight of the machine is supported by the pipe and ultimately by the pipe supports. This is a tremendous upgrade in working habits, if compared to other purely handheld power tools, such angle grinder and equivalent solutions.
Where Are Stainless Steel Pipes Used At?
Food processing
Textile operations
Breweries
Water treatment plants
Oil and gas processing
Fertilizers and pesticides
Chemical applications
Construction
Pharmaceuticals
Automotive components
Straight And Clean Cut Result With Only Minimal Burr
The resulting pipe end will be straight and clean with a nice 90-degree angle, with only a minimal or no burr at all.
Only Minimal Sparking From The Cutting
Normally when cutting stainless steel with a typical grinder-like method, the cutting process will produce excessive sparking that resembles mostly of fireworks show. This “fireworks effect” from typical grinders is extremely dangerous in terms of fire hazards, as the sparks have potential for setting any vulnerable surroundings on fire.
With Exact’s INOX 220 these types of risks are substantially lesser, as the sparking is minimal.
No Kickback From Cutting Stainless Steel (Unlike With Angle Grinder)
There are no kickbacks when using INOX 220 as per the operating instructions, thanks to the machine’s mechanics that grip tightly around the stainless pipe or tube.
Kickbacks are another possible and very serious risk while using an angle grinder to cut stainless steel, and really when cutting almost any pipe or object at all. When something is not firmly attached, the loss of concentration, tiredness, or any other reason, may cause prone for a kickback. The more unfortunate news is that according to scientific studies the most common sites injured are the head and face. The high speed disc of angle grinders does not respect anatomical boundaries or structures and thus the injuries produced can be disfiguring, permanently disabling or even fatal. Injuries resulting from the use of angle grinders are numerous.
“The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents’ Accident Surveillance Systems data ranked angle grinders as the third most dangerous tools, with 5400 injuries recorded annually” [1].
How To Cut Stainless With The Exact Method
This is the best part. Everything you will need is included in one package. The pipe supports holding the pipe, the machine, and the special saw blade. You won’t need to do any extra DIY modifications.
Obviously, you will also need an empty workspace, proper safety gear, obeying all the necessary safety rules.
Regardless if you are an expert or a beginner in this kind of work, INOX 220 is suitable for you.
Step 1. Prepare your workspace
Ensure that there is enough empty space at the place of cutting, no fire and health hazards around. Although this cutting method is a cold cut and thus produces only minimal sparking, it is very important to follow the safety precautions.
Step 2. Setting the pipe on pipe supports (or Pipe Bench)
Use the system supports when cutting pipes. Alternatively, you can use Exact Pipe Bench as shown in the above video. This will ensure safe working and optimum results. In this case, we focus working with the supports included in the package. Work on flat surface. Place the pipe on two supports so that the cutting point is between the supports. Place two more support under both ends of the pipe. Check that all support wheels contact the pipe. When cutting short and light weight pipes, place the supports so that the cutting point is outside supports. Support the pipe with your left leg, if required. Proper arrangements will prevent the blade from jamming as the pipe is cut through.
Step 3. Attaching the pipe saw to the pipe
Open the pipe saw’s gripper unit enough to suit the diameter of the pipe by rotating the adjustment handle located at the rear of the saw. Position the pipe saw on top of the pipe so that the edge of the lower blade guard is at the cutting mark. Fasten the pipe saw to the pipe by turning the gripper adjustment handle until the gripper grips firmly the pipe to be cut. Lock the mechanism by tightening the gripper locking collar. Hold the pipe in place and ensure that pipe saw moves freely in the direction the pipe is fed. For the sake of safety ensure the pipe saw power cable is to the left of the pipe saw. The pipe saw is now ready for cutting.
Step 4. Cutting the stainless steel!
Hold the pipe saw operating handle firmly with your right hand and place your left foot on top of the pipe approximately 50 cm from the pipe saw. To start the motor, release the power-switch locking lever and push the power switch all the way in. Before starting to saw, pull back the lower blade guard handle and wait until the blade reaches full speed. Pierce the pipe wall by pressing pipe saw operating handle downwards slowly and steadily until the blade has cut through the pipe wall (during piercing the pipe must not rotate). Now you can safely start cutting around the pipe. Start cutting by feeding the pipe saw forward and at the same time preventing the pipe from turning, for example with your left foot. Feed the pipe saw forwards for convenient distance.
Step 5. Done!
The machine can now be unattached from the pipe, or repositioned for a new cut.
Please note: Always read the operating instructions before operating the machine.
The waited newcomer is finally out and has arrived to our stock.
You finally have a choice for easier, faster and just more convenient pipe cutting for some of the most challenging pipe materials there are.
That choice is called INOX 220.
The machine has filled a spot on our catalogue as a special tool for stainless steel and acid proof cutting with its specially designed features. INOX has non-marking gripper, contamination preventing blade guard and INOX 140 blade.

A completely new INOX 140 saw blade, over 100 cuts with just one blade
We also developed a completely new INOX 140 saw blade for the best cutting results. It is cutting edge technology from the world’s top blade engineers and in our cutting tests we were able to make over 100 cuts without re-sharpening the blade. Precisely 120 cuts. 120.
The result is record-breaking compared to our other blades intended for cutting stainless steel.
The test pipe was 169 OD, 3 mm wall thickness, 304L stainless.
If the blade is in good condition, it can be re-sharpened up to three times and thus granting immense amount of cuts to be done with just one blade.
The blade’s hard metal tip is optimal for working on hard materials and it leaves minimal burr on pipe end. The new technology also reduces chipping forces which provides better accuracy when blade is getting dull in work. This means less adjusting work and better results.
Exclusive material parts with proven technology guarantees easy cutting and no contamination
INOX Series machines’ contact points to the pipe are made of stainless steel to avoid any contamination. Smooth stainless wheels on gripper do not leave any marks to pipe surface and there is no need for cleaning after cutting. How to improve pipe cutting result of Exact PipeCut saws with Adjusting Wheel
How to improve pipe cutting result of Exact PipeCut saws with Adjusting Wheel
The cut is affected by many factors, e.g. the size of the pipe, the material, the wall thickness, the quality of the pipe’s surface, the roundness, welded seams, blade condition, feed rate, operator’s experience, etc.
For this reason the result may vary, and the saw may move to left or right (misalignment of the cut’s starting and ending point).
The pipe saw gripping unit has one adjustable eccentric wheel which is meant to be used for improving the quality of the cut and for reducing the misalignment. The adjustment applies only to the actual pipe size and material, and the wheel may have to be readjusted when the blade is worn.
The extent of the adjustment depends on the actual misalignment and the size of the pipe.
Remember to lubricate the Adjusting Wheel at regular intervals.
There is an allen key fixed to the handle of the saw for to loosen and tighten the socket set screw.
To adjust the wheel:
Loosen the socket set screw.
Turn the wheel’s center clockwise or counter clockwise to the desired position.
Lock the wheel with the socket set screw.

Exact machine packages are improved and DVDs will be gradually removed
Exact machine packages and changes to the DVD-video included with operating instruction manual.
Exact machine packages
Our products are of high quality and they are intended for demanding conditions. They are meant to endure all normal wear and tear and do not break easily unless misused. We want the same standards for our machine packages.
The carton boxes we used previously were durable, but were still occasionally damaged during the transportation. After all, our machines are being delivered worldwide and the distances may be extremely long.
Sometimes accidents or crashes just happen, and there is nothing to do except to ensure that the package is as good as possible.
As good as possible, now we can finally say that about our machine packages.
The new carton box used is extremely thick and is designed to bear the challenging long journeys all the way from our warehouse to your delivery address. This is not a completely new thing, as we have already been using such packaging for our Pro Series and AIR models (although these were also reinforced along the way), but the new thing is that we are now going to gradually apply this to all of our machines, even to the smaller and older product models.
As mentioned, this is due to happen gradually.
Changes to the DVD-video included with operating instruction manual
Another announcement is about the DVD-video that is included with the operating instruction manual.
It’s year 2020 and seldom people view DVDs any more. In fact, most of the modern laptops – and even many modern desktop PCs – are dropping disc drives. This added to the feedback we have received from our customers about the unnecessity of DVDs, we have finally decided to gradually exclude these from the shipping content.
Also, all of our available videos (instructional, commercial and others) can be viewed on our website’s product pages

Case “Exact underwater”
A success story from Stockholm’s Slussen bridge construction
Exact Underwater – Pneumatic Pipe Cutting
Exact 360 AIR is not only designed for cast iron but it is also capable of cutting steel and plastics, you just need to select the correct blade.
You can use all of our regular blades with the AIR model and do the job – underwater!
Exact 360 AIR machine has been a successful solution in Stockholm’s Slussen bridge renovation project, where there were pipes that needed to be cut at 8 meters deep in sea water.
The divers previously had a problem to get straight pipe ends while cutting underwater, their solution at the time, a gas torch, just did not make the desirable result. The unsatisfying result of melted metal naturally required a lot of time-consuming finishing work to be weld-ready which caused an increase in labor hours leading to a high expenses to the project.
That is when the EXACT 360 AIR was introduced as a solution to help finish the project smoothly and to avoid unnecessary costs and cut time.
The divers cut the pipes with Exact 360 AIR which uses compressed air as a power source. In the beginning one problem came up, “pumping effect”, due to the blade requiring high amount of power with long hoses not delivering enough pressure that deep underwater.
The problem was solved by changing the blade to our Cermet 140 THIN which has thinner teeth and therefore requires less energy to cut. Exhaust air was delivered to surface through a long hose fitted into the exhaust port to increase air flow as much as possible.
After creative problem solving and on the job learning, the Exact 360 AIR made a breakthrough in the project and showed its superiority through its’ work.
Now divers can work safely, quickly and accurately by using our innovative product for their highly demanding work.
